WASHINGTON, DC, November 8, 2013 — The Virginia Department of Fire Programs is hoping to prevent fires with a simple device: an iphone.

The department recently released its new fire safety app, FireSafe Family VA, for iphone, ipad, and android devices.

As Mark Buff, VDFP’s Marketing & Communications Manager said in a press release:

“Our goal is to keep home fire safety prominent in their minds by providing this tool that allows the user to perform a home fire safety assessment, create a home escape plan, share that plan with family and friends, and receive periodic push notifications that will remind them to do tasks such as testing their smoke detectors monthly.”

FireSafe Family VA includes fire safety games, push notifications for fire safety reminders, a customizable safety plan, custom home mapping for planning emergency situations, information on fires, and a safety meter that shows how your current readiness.

Virginia’s Department of Emergency Management tweeted a photo of the new app yesterday morning, showing the state’s determination to make this winter the safest one yet.
