Shanahan expected to be fired soon; who's next in line for Redskins?

The latest loss was just too much. Rumor is that Mike Shanahan will be fired any day now. Who will be next to join the long line of unsuccessful coaches? Photo: Snyder and Shanahan/ AP

WASHINGTON, December 10, 2013 —  News outlets around the beltway have already started packing the bags of Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan.

The embarrassing 45 – 10 loss this past weekend to Kansas City seems to have caused fans to reach their breaking point.

Shanahan’s only post season appearance with the team came last year when an already injured Griffin sustained a severe knee injury in a loss against the Seattle Seahawks. The head coach currently has a record of 24 – 36 since joining the Redskins in 2010.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post is reporting that the team is investigating ways to not pay the $7 million for next year’s season that would be owed Shanahan under his contract is he is the Washington coach or not.

Speculation is not focusing these days on if Shanahan will be fired but when. With nothing left to play for, he may be fired before the season is over by what was reported to be a “furious” Snyder for the leaked ESPN story about Shanahan almost walking away from the team at the end of last season.

CBS Sports is speculating that when the head coaching position is open, the Redskins will be interested in speaking to Art Briles of Baylor who coached Robert Griffin III in college and continues to have a good relationship with him today.

CBS Sports also believes that Shanahan will quickly be picked up by Houston.

The Washington Redskins have had head coaches since Daniel Snyder bought the team that look like an all star dream team to include Marty Schottenheimer, Joe Gibbs, Steve Spurrier and Mike Shanahan yet the team has only had one playoff win in the past 13 seasons.

All eyes will now be focused on who will be next to join the constantly revolving door of Washington Redskins coaches.
