Dancing With The Stars Week 3 preview: No April Fool, it’s Prom Night

Who thought a Prom Night theme complete with voting for a Prom King and Queen was a good idea for Dancing With The Stars? Photo: It's Prom Night on Dancing With The Stars / ABC

SAN DIEGO – March 31, 2013 – The producers of “Dancing With The Stars” love their theme nights. In the first few seasons, we had obvious themes like Latin Night. In more recent seasons, the producers have tried to get more creative. It seems lately with the exception of the “Trios” routines, the themes have done a serious crash and burn.

This week, someone must have looked at the calendar and noticed it was April Fool’s Day on Monday. It’s the only possible explanation for the theme: Prom Night. Come on, does anyone over the age of 20 have fond memories of the high school prom? Does anyone really want to relive the cringe inducing experience in front of an audience?

But wait, there’s more. ABC is inviting the viewers to help select the Prom King and Queen of the night. Nope, you can’t make this up. ABC announced via news release that viewers can vote via Twitter by posting the hashtag #prom and the first name of the competitor. For example, #promandy or #promwynonna. Yes, those were the actual examples ABC chose.

The winners of the Twitter based hashtag votes will be “named” Prom King and Queen and receive two bonus points for the night. It may make a difference to the couples in danger of elimination.

There are two contestants actually prom age: Zendaya Coleman is 16, Aly Raisman is 18 and no doubt missed her prom preparing for the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

The greatest hope is that actor/comedians Andy Dick and DL Hughley go for broke with the comedy this week during their Prom Night routines. Andy Dick and partner Sharna Burgess hit the right formula with their Mad Hatter/Lady Gaga routine last week. If Andy and Sharna go for twisted, Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy can go for sincere. The rest of the competitors, well good luck to you.

Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko: Next to leave Dancing With The Stars after Prom Night? Photo: ABC/Adam Taylor.

With the untimely departure due to injury of Dorothy Hamill and Tristan McManus as the first couple to leave, either Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold and Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko had their bacon saved to compete again this week. They were the two in danger of leaving before Hamill announced she would withdraw. Both need to step it up and make the most of their reprieve this week. Prom night may be the kiss of death for the Desperate… whoops, the Real Housewives reality star.

The dance order is still emerging at publication time; we will update until show time. ABC’s official Dancing With The Stars page reports the following songs will be used on the show: “Do You Think I’m Sexy” by Rod Stewart; “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins; “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen; and “YMCA” by the Village People.

Since just one couple is dancing a Jive, it makes sense that Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough will draw “Footloose.” “Another One Bites the Dust” has Paso Doble all over it, so look for Ingo and Kym to perform to Queen.  Rod Stewart could be any of the Latin numbers. “YMCA” and Andy Dick are a campy match made in DWTS Heaven. Producers, please don’t let the fans down.

The dance assignments for this week will be updated as we know them and listed first; then the rest of the couple along with phone and text voting information. You can vote via text message using the last four numbers for any couple. You can also vote on the official Dancing With The Stars page on Facebook,  or online at the ABC Dancing With The Stars page.
