Reaction to Newtown shootings on Twitter by celebrities, politicians

SAN DIEGO, December 14, 2012 – Within minutes and in the hours following news of the horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the world turned as it now does in huge numbers to Twitter to express sorrow, outrage, and frustration.

The human need to reach out and communicate, connect, and contemplate what has happened is nothing new. What is new is the speed, the universality, and the platform now provided by Twitter and other social networks as our modern communal town square.

Among the reactions posted and shared around the world (in no particular order and chosen only as a random sample):
