WASHINGTON D.C., August 23, 2012 – In an interview with Cathedral Age, the official magazine of the Washington National Cathedral, President Obama remarked:

“…my Christian faith gives me a perspective and security that I don’t think I would have otherwise: That I am loved. That, at the end of the day, God is in control – and my main responsibility is to love God with all of my heart, soul and mind, and to love my neighbor as myself. Now, I don’t always live up to that standard, but it is a standard I am always pursuing …”

But is God really in control of the White House, let alone Washington D.C. right now?

As a Christian believer, I can’t help but think upon what God said to the prophet Isaiah: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” In plain language, it’s easy during campaign season to profess “love” for God but real love for God is obedience to God’s commands.

After reading President Obama’s remarks, I can’t help but ask a few faith questions of my own.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Mr. President, why am I being compelled to buy mandatory health insurance under threat of IRS penalty or even imprisonment?

Jesus told his disciples in Luke 10:7, “the worker deserves his wages.” Why then, Mr. President are you talking about rich people “paying their fair share” and raising taxes? Their “fair share” is to keep 100 percent of their income.

The Bible says in Romans 13:8, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.” Mr. President, why is it we keep raising the debt ceiling and why is it we are running a trillion dollars in the red every fiscal year?

Jeremiah the Prophet also said, “Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place” (Jeremiah 22:3).

Mr. President, why is the U.S. Government killing innocent people with missiles fired from unmanned drones? Why are American citizens being killed without the benefit of a trial? Why are we continuing the practice of extraordinary rendition and handing over people to foreign countries to be “tortured” for information?

And when will we have a truthful answer over Operation: Fast and Furious?

God promised in Isaiah 32:17, “The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.” Mr. President why is it that America is not at peace but is divided at home with angry protests in our city, violence on our borders, perpetual threat of terrorism ever before our eyes?

Why is it that China and Russia are spending billions of dollars and modernizing their militaries and expanding their power while America’s power declines?

The blessing of the Lord makes us rich and adds no sorrow. Yet lately, all we have had in America is one sorrow upon another.  I’m thankful Mr. President that you believe God is in control but everything around us suggests that God is no longer in control. Why is that? Is there something you know that the rest of America doesn’t know? Why is God’s hand against us?

Mr. President, I think America needs to look to the exhortation of what is written in 1 John 4:1: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
