GOINS-PHILLIPS: Obama "Cult of Personality" has Government over God

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., August 2, 2013 — President Obama knows that if the peoples’ faith rests in government elites, his power has no competitors. When individuals abandon their own moral and religious compass, the ruling Democratic party can fill the void.

Much of Washington is power hungry. It pursues the blind faith of the American people, a faith that pushes aside personal faith. The systematic manipulation of the American public and the peoples’ abandonment of fundamental values has created a perfect storm of social issues intertwined with political agenda.

The American government is spiraling out of control. Americans are beginning to realize our national dilemma. Wildly unpopular legislation is endlessly paraded before us and scandalous scenarios are raining down like rocks on a glass roof. 

Looking back through the lens of the monumental struggles this great nation has overcome, we more clearly see the destruction this path will lead to.

As Capitol Hill and the Obama administration continue to promise false hope and deliver unprecedented destruction, Obama marches forward with a hollow promise of a better tomorrow.

For example, the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land and has proven to be nothing more than a deterrent to economic growth. However, Obama is out touting and campaigning for it as if it is the medicine this ailing economy needs.

Atrocities such as the NSA, IRS and Benghazi scandals are shooting holes in Obama’s hollow promise of transparency. To him, these are just an “endless parade of phony scandals.” In the midst of all this, why is Obama out campaigning? Because, this is the storm he has created.

The “cult of personality,” as defined by Princeton University, is “when an individual uses mass media, propaganda or other methods to create an idealized and heroic public image.”

This technique can be best implemented when the burden of trust rests not on the shoulders of the governed, or on the sovereign God, but on the elites governing.

Americans have abandoned an essential truth: God is sovereign. This has led to god-like government and the demise of liberty, two results that are intertwined. In the middle of a godless society, the “cult of personality” flourishes. Who better to take God’s place than the President?

Dr. Glenn Martin, a professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, writes in his book, Prevailing Worldviews of Western Society Since 1500, “The sovereignty of God is simply the recognition that God is the ultimate. There is nothing higher than God, nothing beyond God, nothing behind God. He is the final authority.”

No government institution can save you, nor can it make you good. From a secular standpoint, government has taken the role of God. Among the religious and faith-based community, government has, in many cases, been interposed between God and humanity. The abandonment of this fundamental truth, upon which our nation was founded, has wrought havoc on our political wellbeing.

In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson received a letter from the Baptist Association of Danbury, Connecticut. The Danbury Baptists were strong supporters of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

However, the Danbury Association did not find that language strong enough. On January 1, 1802, President Jefferson, in support of the Baptists’ concerns, replied, “I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights.”

These “natural rights” to which Jefferson referred was every promise from God described in the Bible. The President went on to say, “And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure if we have lost the only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?”

Thomas Jefferson recognized that, without the fundamental understanding that the freedoms presented in the Constitution are wholly a result of God’s promises, the entire institution of government, and the protection of liberty, will ultimately self-implode.

Then enters the “cult of personality.” The American people have placed all of their trust and faith in the government, ultimately abandoning trust in God and their own moral judgment.

The true unemployment rate is hovering near fifteen percent and Americans are more dependent on government assistance than ever before. The White House, uninterested in reducing this dependence, seems focused instead on expanding it.

Laws like Obamacare are wrecking the economy and expanding the government’s power. All the while, Obama claims it will solve all our problems, and that all economic destruction is the result of gridlock caused by the Republican-led House. As the train is flying off the tracks, the President is retaining his underdog, savior image, campaigning as if he’s defending middle class America from the big, bad Republicans.

The only way for the American people to take control of their government is to rediscover the fundamental truths of the United States’ founding. We the people must once again place our faith in the sovereignty of God and the foundational truth described in our Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This is a fight, not between Republican and Democrat, but between God and government.
