Manchester City is highest paid sports team in the world

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2013 — English soccer club Manchester City pays out the biggest annual salary to its first team players according to Sportingintelligence’s Global Sports Salaries Survey (GSSS) for 2013.

The survey, compiled in association with ESPN The Magazine, reports that City, which won the Premier League title in 2011-2012, is the best paid team in the global sports market.

The average first team pay over a year at City is $8,059,477, or $154,990 weekly. City, which is bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour, a member of the ruling family of Abu Dhab, climbed up from the third spot in the 2012 survey.   

The Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball, rose from No. 69 on the list last year to the No. 2 spot, paying out an average first team pay annually of $7,468,882, or $143, 632 weekly.

Eight international soccer teams are included in the top 12 highest paid sports teams in the world (see chart below) showing the power of soccer in the sports world. The top 12 on the list includes four Americans sports franchises, three baseball and one basketball.

Barcelona, the highest paid team in the world in the 2012 survey, dropped to the fourth spot, while Real Madrid dropped from second to third.

Local soccer team, D.C. United, comes in at 258th on the list with an average annual first team salary of $135,135, and $2,599 weekly. The highest paid MLS team, is the New York Red Bulls, with an average annual first team salary of $387,891, and $7,459 weekly, coming in at 225 on the global sports list.
