WASHINGTON, Jan. 20, 2012 - Midfielder Danny Cruz, who started for the  Houston Dynamo in the 2011 MLS Cup against the Los Angeles Galaxy, has joined D.C. United from the Dynamo in exchange for a partial allocation.

The 21-year old is originally from Petersburg, Virginia and spent three seasons with Houston. The right-sided midfielder is noted for having a powerful left-foot shot.

“We’re pleased to have concluded a deal to acquire Danny from Houston,” said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper. “He is a tenacious player who brings a lot of energy and bite to the midfield and we are thrilled to have him at United. At 22, he has enormous upside and we look forward to his contributions for years to come.”

The 5-foot, 8-inch midfielder played in 20 games with the Dynamo in 2011, earning two goals and three assists, despite missing games with a quad injury. He started all four of the Dynamo’s MLS Cup playoff matches. Houston lost 1-0 to the Galaxy in the final, with Cruz being substituted in the 78th minute. His contract was not picked up by the Dynamo at the end of 2011.

Before joining the Dynamo, Cruz spent two years at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He has played at numerous levels for the U.S. team program and competed at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in South Korea and the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt.
