WASHINGTON, Jan. 16, 2012 - The U.S. women's national team found themselves at a murder scene on Tuesday night. A man was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a restaurant at the hotel where the team is staying during the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
According to news reports the Vancouver Police confirmed that around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, there was a shooting inside Bar One restaurant of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Center's north tower. A bullet hole was visible in glass of the restaurant which faces onto Hornby Street. It was the city's first murder victim of 2012.
No member of the U.S. delegation witnessed the incident and all are safe. Police have not identified the victim and had no information on a suspect.
In a press release U.S. Soccer said that it had "taken the proper precautions to ensure the safety of the team for the duration of the competition."
"Saved by our instant yoga session," tweeted goalkeeper Hope Solo. "Was about to walk to starbucks when all hell broke loose in the lobby of our hotel! Life is precious ..."
The Vancouver Sun reported that the victim appeared to been targeted.
The U.S. team plays the Dominican Republic at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday.
