WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2011 - Former England captain David Beckham has been named to the 2011 Major League Soccer's Best XI team. Major League Soccer's Commissioner Don Garber announced the 2011 Best XI during his annual State of the League teleconference call today. The Best XI recognizes the league’s top 11 players at each position on the field. Players, club leaders, and media members vote for the top 11.

 This is Beckham's first time on the MLS list. Beckham helped the Los Angeles Galaxy win the Supporters’ Shield for best regular season record for the second consecutive year. Former Arsenal star Thierry Henry, was also named to the MLS Best XI team.

Beckham and the Galaxy will now play the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup final on Nov. 20  at the Galaxy's home ground, the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Appearing in 26 games this season, Beckham ranked second in the league in assists (15), first in game-winning assists (7) and was a key force for a Galaxy attack that scored 48 goals. He also scored two goals. Beckham has appeared in 115 games for England, scoring 17 times. More than 50 of Beckham’s caps have come as the England captain. He is expected to play for Great Britain in the London Olympics.

Goalkeeper – Kasey Keller (Seattle Sounders FC)

Defender – Todd Dunivant (LA Galaxy)

Defender – Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy)

Defender – Jamison Olave (Real Salt Lake)

Midfielder – David Beckham (LA Galaxy)

Midfielder – Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo)

Midfielder – Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United)

Midfielder – Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

Midfielder – Brek Shea (FC Dallas)

Forward – Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls)

Forward – Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

 

After winning the Supporters’ Shield for best regular season record, the LA Galaxy lead all teams with four players named.
