WASHINGTON — The rebuilding of D.C. United continues. United has signed 24-year-old defender Rodrigo Brasesco in a loan deal with Uruguayan Primera Division team Racing Club. Brasesco has spent the last two years with Racing.

A native of Montevideo, Brasesco will be the first Uruguayan to join the D.C. outfit.

“Rodrigo is a young player, but at the same time he is bringing a lot of experience to our club,” said coach Ben Olsen. “He’s played in some very important matches in Uruguay and in South American competition, and he gives us another good option in the back.”

Brasesco helped Racing to the top of the Primera Division in the most recent Apertura, starting all 15 league games. In the 2009-2010 campaign, he played featured in 24 matches (23 starts). He also helped his club qualify to the Copa Libertadores for the first time in its history.

“Rodrigo is strong and tenacious defender who can play in central or right side defense,” said general manager Dave Kasper. “We are excited to have conclude a deal to bring him to D.C. United.”

United gave up 47 goals in 30 last season and was the fourth worst defense in the league.
