The Washington Freedom bolstered it’s defense when its selected University of Colorado defender Nikki Marshall in the first round of the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer draft in Philadelphia on Friday. The Freedom took Marshall with the seventh overall pick. The expansion Atlanta Beat selected Tar Heels midfielder and up-and-coming U.S. team star, Tobin Heath for the overall first pick.

Marshall is a member of the United States U-23 Women’s national team and played every minute of every game in the 2008 U-20 World Cup in Chile.

“We believe she will bring a very good defensive presence and will fit in very well with the rest of the Freedom team,” said Freedom coach Jim Gabarra in statement.

The Freedom plays its home games at the MD Soccerplex in Boyds, MD, as well as doubleheader games at RFK stadium. The Washington Freedom  hosts its season opener on April 10th, against the Boston Breakers.
