TULSA, Okla., March 18th, 2011—Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament continues in Tulsa as the number one seeded Kansas Jayhawks (32-2) take on the 16th seeded Boston University Terriers (21-13).
This really shouldn’t be a good game, but you never know because Kansas has bad luck in the state of Oklahoma. Twice the Jayhawks have been upset in Oklahoma City in the tournament. We are up the road in Tulsa, so maybe they will have better luck this time.
Keep refreshing for the live blogging throughout the game.
What song is the band playing? How many fans does each team have in attendance? If you have no preference is there any reason not to root for a team that has the Terrier mascot? All will be discussed tonight and more!
To say there are 100 times as many KU fans here as BU fans would be an understatement. The starting line-ups were like a home game for Kansas. The Jayhawk band did play “Ghostbusters.” I’m not sure the significance but it was awesome. The only thing that would make me happier is if Ray Parker, Jr. was here.
2-2 with 17:30 to play.
5-2 Kansas with 15:55 left in the first half. BU is not scared. The talent levels are obviously not equal, but BU is playing hard and taking to them.
Upset Alert! John Holland from Boston hits a 3. Tied up 5-5.
Shout out to Adam and Danielle Boxburger. Adam is the biggest KU fan I know and they had a baby boy this morning, Tripp Matthew. Named after the Morris twins.
I talked to sideline reporter Craig Sager. He is rocking a pink jacket and some Nikes. He remembered me from the Basketball HOF Enshrinement. I guess I believe him.
Kansas finally takes the lead again with 10:30 to play. 12-10 KU. Much better game than I anticipated.
Kansas is up 18-16 with 7:43 left in the first half. The crowd is a little stunned. Not much noise during a time out. The Jayhawks will pull this one out, but who knew BU had this much fight in them?
John Holland hits another 3 pointer. He has 13 of BU’s 19 points.
Game is tied up again as Boston’s Dom Morris hits a three. 22-22. I just realized something about BU. In “The Social Network,” that is where Mark Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend went to school. I think right now Mark’s girlfriend “Likes” this game.
Time out with 3:49 to play and the score is still 25-22 KU. The BU band is playing Journey’s “Anyway You Want It.” It sounds…ok. I want it to be in tune.
At half time the Jayhawks lead 33-29. Most 16/1 games are boring and blowouts. This game has been great. A one seed has never lost to a 16 seed. Are we about to see history? Probably not.
18:30 left in the second half Kansas leads 37-32. Kansas has come out stronger in this half. I think Bill Self and his hair piece must have given a good speech.
Kansas is starting to pull away with the score 41-32 with 14:39 to go in the game. The crowd has gotten more into the second half. BU is still not scare though. This one might stay close all game.
The calls seem to be going more in BU’s favor right now. Not what I expected. D.J. Irving steps to the line and knocks down two shots. 43-36 KU.
11 minutes to go and BU has the ball. Holland gets fouled and goes to the line. BU is getting the calls. I don’t know if it will be enough to win, but I am surprised.
Brady Morningstar hits a three and the Kansas fans lose it. They are finally getting into this game. I think they are a little shocked, but KU is slowly pulling away.
One of the Morris twins (I can’t tell them apart) hits a shot to put the Jayhawks up 58-43. Just like that Kansas is up by 15.
The BU band playing a little Boston. Appropriate.
The Illinois band is here and is openly cheering for Boston. No real surprise there, and neither are their haircuts.
2:37 left in the game. It’s all but over with KU leading 70-48. The Terriers just got worn down. They haven’t given up, though. Good team, but Kansas is just better.
Kansas emptied the bench and they are still dominating. 72-51 with 1:37 left.
The KU fans have started the “Rock Chalk” chant. And it sounds weird.
That’s it. Kansas wins 72-53. They advance to the next round. Find out who they play as we live blog the next game between Illinois and UNLV.
