OKLAHOMA CITY, July 11, 2011—Derek Jeter joined the prestigious 3,000 hit club on Saturday. He was only the second player in history to have his 3,000th hit be a home run. (Wade Boggs was the other.) A Yankee fan named Christian Lopez caught the historic baseball. When the Yankee brass got ahold of C-Lo, they asked him what he wanted for the ball.
What do you want for one the most famous baseballs from one of the most famous baseball players of all time from the most famous team in history?
Here’s what I would’ve wanted:
I want a contract. Even if it’s for a day, I want to don the pinstripes. Sign me to a contract for a million dollars, give me a press conference and let me hold up the jersey for the photographers. I want to talk about how I have dreamt of this all my life. There were a lot of opportunities to go to other teams. I thought about Texas so I could play close to home, but in the end I wanted to go to a team where I could win championships.
Take me to my new locker, next to Jeter of course, and let me get comfortable. While we are sitting next to each other in our lockers, I need Jeter to start signing. Baseballs, jerseys, bats, helmets, swatches of carpet, whatever. Get some pens. And I need all of them to say, “To my best friend of all time, thank you for the 3,000th hit baseball and for introducing me to Jessica Alba. Derek Jeter #2.”
Next, I want Jeter’s list of contacts. Get me a pop star. Jeter has dated the likes of Jordana Brewster, Mariah Carey and Minka Kelly just to name a few. Get a pop star down to the stadium. I am going to need someone to get me some face time with the photographers.
Now let’s take a tour. Take me around the new stadium. Maybe we will get some wings at the Hard Rock Cafe. I want a tour of Monument Park while Jeter carries me. I don’t weigh that much. I am exhausted from that press conference and watching him sign all of that stuff. I can’t be walking around!
Let’s go talk to A Rod and try and get him figured out. Let’s work on getting him some personality. Actually, that might be a waste of time.
After I throw out the first pitch I need to take it easy. So I want to just relax in the dugout while sifting through Joe Girardi’s binder.
After the game, let’s go get a bite to eat. Jeter’s pick. Who am I to be picky?
That sounds like that would do it. One day contract, some bucks, a few signed items (nothing ridiculous) and memories I will never forget.
Oh, and if the Yankees win the World Series, I get a ring.
That should do it. You’re welcome.
