Favre, Cowboys and other NFL predictions

Pro football finally gets underway Thursday night as the Minnesota Vikings take on the defending champion New Orleans Saints. Some are even billing it as the mammoth match of the weekend.

So here are my somewhat bold, somewhat stupid predictions for the 2010 NFL season.

Brett Favre’s streak of consecutive starting games will end.

Favre currently holds the record with 286 starts. He has had numerous injuries before but he always played. I just don’t see his surgically repaired ankle holding up this year. After a preseason game he had his ankle injected with lubricant. Lubricant! Did you know you can inject lubricant in your body? A team will get to him (maybe the Jets in week five) and he may have to sit a game. Fun fact: Did you know Favre’s middle name is Lorenzo?

Jets won’t win their division.

I love Rex Ryan and this defense looks pretty stout, but the offense looks awful. Usually Hard Knocks makes you look really good but not this year. The AFC East is tough anyway. I like New England and I also like the Dolphins. The Jets will still make the playoffs as a wild card.

The Dallas Cowboys won’t make the playoffs.

Wade Phillips looks like he doesn’t know where he is most of the time. Roy Williams is a joke, Miles Austin needs to prove he can keep up his own pace and I just don’t trust Tony Romo. He will have flashes of brilliance but he hasn’t gone to the next level of quarterbacks yet. The Cowboys have to go to Green Bay, Minnesota and Indianapolis. The Saints and Titans come to Arlington. That’s a tough schedule and the NFC East is probably the toughest division in football. There is a lot of pressure to be the first team to play in the Super Bowl in it’s own stadium. Too much pressure.

Both Super Bowl teams from 2009 will make the playoffs.

This doesn’t sound that bold until you look at history. The Steelers missed the post season last year after winning the Super Bowl the year before. The Bears missed in 2008 and so on. I think the Colts and Saints are too good. I see them both in the postseason.

Buffalo won’t win a game.

I don’t feel that strongly about this one. Not because the Bills might be better than I think, but because they play the Browns, the Lions and the Chiefs. It’s hard to run the table.

The Rams will double their win total.

OK, so they won two games last year. Getting to four shouldn’t be that hard should it? They play in the weakest division in the NFC West and I like Sam Bradford. Surely there are four wins in playing the Seahawks and Cardinals twice. Also, the Chiefs and Lions are on the schedule.

Other quick predictions that aren't that bold:

Chris Johnson won't rush for 2,000 yards. Aaron Rodgers will win MVP. TO will not be a factor for the Bengals. I will lose my fantasy football league.

Some of these are bolder than others and I’m sure I missed on several. But it’s fun to put stuff out there and see what sticks.

Super Bowl prediction:

Packers over Ravens
