ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas is football country. And right now football is being very, very bad to Texas. The Longhorns lost Saturday to Baylor giving them three losses in Austin. The Dallas Cowboys are doing worse with a 1-5 record going into Sunday’s game against Jacksonville.
With the Cowboys game at noon, and the Ranger World Series game that night along with the stadiums being right across the parking lot from each other, many fans decided to take in a double-header.
The mood was somber walking to Cowboys Stadium. Even within an hour of game time, there was not much traffic. Most fans were clad in Romo or Ware jerseys but there was a distinct amount of Rangers jerseys, too.
A generously purported gentlemen was shirtless and had all blue body paint. His daughter stood next to him with a sign that said, “Will trade dad for tickets.” Cowboys tickets? “No, World Series tickets,” she said.
“We are doing lunch with the Cowboys,” Rick Schneider said. “And dinner with the Rangers.”
Schneider has been a Cowboys season ticket holder for five years but admits getting caught up in Ranger fever.
“I was able to get some tickets through work,” Schneider said. “I love my Cowboys, but this season is over. I need the Ranger game tonight to put me in a good mood.”
At the game many fans wore a Ranger hat with a Cowboy t-shirt. The popular “claw” t-shirts were well represented.
A 400 level upper deck ticket is worth $109 face value. Even with those prices, the Cowboys are usually the hot ticket. Not Sunday as one fan held up a sign that read, “Couldn’t afford World Series tickets.”
Dallas lost to Jacksonville 35-17 putting their record at 1-6. The fans booed and began the trek out of the enormous stadium to begin the walk to the Rangers ballpark.
To get from one to the next you must cross a bridge. On the other side Rangers fans were waiting. “Come to the other side!” A fan said. “It gets better over here.”
One game down, one more to go. Because at least for right now, Texas will have to be baseball country.
