NCAA Tournament: Kansas State vs. BYU live!

Jason Black blogs live from the second round of the NCAA Tournament from Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA CITY- Well if the second game is anything like the first then we are in for a treat.  Kansas State is the 2 seed and BYU is the 7.  BYU has really good guards and a star in Jimmer Fredette.  KSU has Denis Clemente who is Roberto Clemente’s nephew!

7:33 BYU jumps out to an early 12-2 lead.  Guard play is important in the tournament.

7:40 KSU’s Dominique Sutton blocks a shot.  Clemente scores a 2 on the other end. The Wildcats coach is notoriously angry about everything. Its kind of comical although I am always worried he is going to murder someone in the stands. 13-9 BYU with 12:38 left to play in the first half.

7:50 Jacob Pullen hits a 3 to put KSU within 5.  He is very popular because of his beard.  BYU’s Jimmer Fredette draws a foul and hits both free throws.  Fredette was the hero for the Cougars in the first round.  He already has 6 points.  Jonathan Tavernari nails a 3 but Wally Judge dunks and gets fouled for KSU.  He makes the free throw.  23-16.

7:54 The Wildcats get a turnover.  Timeout.  A few thoughts during the timeout.  The K State mascot is just a guy with a wildcat head on.  He has a uniform and nothing else.  No cat arms or legs, just bare skin.  I just spotted a fan wearing a snuggie.  Given the weather, that is appropriate.  In the first game I had Northern Iowa fans behind me.  Now I have KSU fans.  They are not as polite.

8:04 the game is all tied up.  BYU turns the ball over but KSU can’t capitalize.  Tyler Haws gets fouled and makes both shots to put the Cougars back ahead.

8:07 Pullen hits a 3 to put K State up by 1. Pullen and his beard take a seat.  BYU’s Brandon Davies put them back up buy 1. Timeout.

8:15 Pullen get fouled attempting a 3.  He did a nice job.  I don’t think he was going to shoot but when their was contact he put the shot up.  The BYU bench can’t believe it.  He makes all 3 shots.  35-29 KSU.

8:17 Pullen hits another 3.  Wow this guy already has 17 points.  No wonder people like his beard so much.

8:20 Pullen hits another 3!  Wow.  I like this guy.  BYU turns the ball over.  For some reason Frank Martin is still fuming.  BYU’s James anderson blocks a shot into the bench.  Nice.  Shot clock violation on KS.  3.2 seconds remain in the half. The Cougars James Anderson tips the ball in at the buzzer. 41-33.

8:25 Whoops.  Never mind.  The refs watch the replay and the shot did not count.  41-31 at the half.

I have changed the picture to show you Willie the Wildcat and his bare arms.

8:54 Wally Judge hit a shot in the lane.  Fredette misses on the other end for BYU.  Pullen hits another 3!  That’s 23 points for him.  K State leads 50-40 15:31 left to play in the game.

9:02 Clemente gets into the act knocking down a 3 pointer but local Noah Hartsock answers for BYU with a 2. Shot clock violation Wildcats.

9:09 Clemente scores another 3 pointer.  He’s got 17 points.  Right before that Fredette got hit accidentally in the nose.  Clemente went to see if he was ok, but Fredette has gone to the bench to get his wits.

9:16 The crowd finally comes alive with a Wally Judge slam.  But they become irritated quickly as a foul is called on K State.  Still a 10 point game, 64-54.

9:27 The fans have not been happy with the refs all night and they continue their displeasure as a block is called on Sutton.  Fredette has had a solid tournament and he is definetly the leader on the floor.  He controls the tempo for the Cougars and right now leads them with 14 points and 4 assists.

9:31 Pullen hits another 3 pointer.  That gives him 28 points.  K State’s Kelly Curtis blocks a shot and gives the ball right back to the Wildcats.  Back to a 10 point lead 71-61.

9:38 Fredette gets fouled by Clemente and hits the shot.  He also makes the free throw.  Davies commits a foul for the Cougars.  Now he and Hartsock have fouled out.  BYU is running out of players and time.  Pullen makes both of his free throws.  He has 32 points.  Nice game.  With 1:28 left in the game K State is up by 9.  Not over by any means.

9:43 KSU is up by 11 and BYU has started fouling.  This one appears to be over.  Curtis makes both of his free throws.  BYU has pulled Fredette.  Its over.

9:50 Put it in the books.  Survive and advance.  K State moves on to the Sweet Sixteen with a 84-72 victory over BYU.
