VANCOUVER, British Columbia-After witnessing the Americans dismantle Finland 6-1 the crowd chanted “We want Canada.” Canada wants USA but had to get past Slovakia first in the semifinal round of Olympic Hockey.
It only took 24 minutes to go up 3-0 with Patrick Marleau, Brenden Morrow and Ryan Getzlaf each scoring a goal for Canada.
Canada looked like they were going to cruise to the gold medal game. The Canadian fans started chanting “We want USA.” That almost didn’t happen as Lubomir Visnovsky and Michal Handzus scored for Slovakia less than four minutes apart in the third period.
The last five minutes it seemed that Canada started to panic with the game starting to slip away.
The last minute can only be described as chaos as Slovakia furiously took shot after shot on Canada’s goal. One shot came very close to going in narrowly missing with only 10 seconds left to play.
As the clock went to zero the fans exploded in cheers and relief.
The US beat Canada earlier in pool play. A rematch has ben a popular topic. The wish has been granted as the two countries will meet on Sunday at 12:15.
USA has not won a hockey gold medal in the Olympics since 1980 in Lake Placid. Canada hasn’t won since 2002 in Salt Lake City.
The U.S. hasn’t won Olympic gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980.
