WASHINGTON, May 6, 2012 - It is May 6th, the tequila is tucked back in the cabinet and its time to ask: What was Justin Bieber doing ringside at last night’s championship fight?
Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather and pop star Justin Bieber just seem an unlikely duo, however the hearth throb identifies with the ring’s champion.
At last nights match Cotto vs. Mayweather, Mayweather’s best friend and hip-hop star 50 Cent was expected to walk the champ to the ring Saturday night for his fight against Miguel Cotto.
Some tweeting earlier in the day prepared us for another music star - Justin Bieber – to be a part of the house, but he had his role in the fight as he carried Mayweather’s championship belts to the ring, standing by the pugilists side as ring announcer Michael Buffer went through the introductions.
There is a reason for Bieber’s interest, and it is not to sell records or increase visibility. He is a genuine fan of the sport, he father being a fighter and he is known to don the gloves and step inside the ropes. Though one has to believe he wears gear to protect that face, and nose.
Bieber has spoken of his affection for Mayweather in the past, most notable in V magazine
ED Why do you think you’re such an easy target? Is it your age? Your demographic? Your level of success?

Yeah, I mean, when I was coming up, trying to get to where I am now, people were so happy [for me]. They were rooting for me. Now that I’m on top, everyone wants to bring me down. Everyone’s trying to tug at me and take my spot. And that’s how it always is, everyone wants you to be on top, and as soon as you’re there—like Floyd Mayweather, he’s the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion. Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, “He’s going to lose this time,” and then he wins. And the next time they say, “He’s going to lose,” again; “he’s undefeated, he’s getting old, he’s going to fight Ortiz, who’s younger, and he’s going to lose.” Every time he wins. And people aren’t ever going to know that he’s a champ. (V Magazine- Elliott David)
So the Bieber is not just posing, being a tough guy wanna be. He has some credibility standing next to Mayweather.
But I could do without the “faux” Elvis pompadour and bling look on Mr. Bieber.
I just don’t think he should try to put on the ‘street,’ on the other hand his purple hoodie would just not make it ringside.
