NORTH-CENTRAL FLORIDA, November 5, 2012 – Back in May, I predicted Governor Mitt Romney would win the presidency with 283 electoral votes to 255 for President Barack Obama.
Keeping in mind that I am “often wrong, but never in doubt,” not a single state in my mind has switched. This will be a return to the traditional electoral maps of 2000 and 2004. Governor Romney will win Virginia (higher turnout in Southern Virginia), Florida (slight Jewish crossover), and with ease, North Carolina (gay marriage angered black preachers). President Obama will win Wisconsin (liberal revenge), Michigan (unions’ last stand), and Pennsylvania (blacks in Philadelphia).
Everything comes down to Ohio. Turnout is down in Democratic Cleveland and enthusiasm is sky high in Republican Western strongholds from Cincinnati to the Northwest. Romney wins Ohio by the same margin he will win the nationwide popular vote, 51 to 48%. The margin will be just enough to prevent Al Gore’s revenge.
Everything will come down to the ground game in Ohio, and many conservative evangelicals who stayed home in 2008 will return.
Republicans will narrowly retake the Senate and easily hang on to the House.
Americans usually choose hope over fear, and Mr. Obama’s hard negative slash and burn tactics will turn off just enough people. Osama bin Laden, Ambassador Stevens, social issues, and Hurricane Sandy will still take a back seat to the economy. Enough people will trust Mr. Romney’s background to give him a shot.
This race has all the feel of an exact 2004 repeat, which is what it will be.
President-Elect Mitt Romney wins 283-255 electorally, 51-48% popular vote, and 30 states to 20.
