WASHINGTON, December 24, 2011 — It’s almost the Night Before Christmas. And it also happens to be this critic’s birthday. We needn’t attempt to draw any conclusions from this seeming coincidence. But yours truly plans to take a short break today and tomorrow just to kick back and enjoy the season.
You should, too.
And just in time to help out, here’s a beautiful, if slightly fuzzy, YouTube video extracted from a 1978 Christmas Special featuring the late, great Luciano Pavarotti performing the ancient Christian hymn, “Adeste Fidelis” (“O Come, All Ye Faithful”) as recorded in Montréal’s magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral. He’s joined by Les Disciples de Massenet (“Massenet’s Disciples,” an adult choir that seems to very much appreciate the operas of French composer Jules Massenet); Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal (literally, “The Little Singers of Mount Royal,” a children’s choir); and a full orchestra, all of whom are conducted by Franz-Paul Decker.
Old though it is, this video somehow conjures up the beauty and majesty of those memorable Christmases of old, before this religious holiday was completely submerged beneath a tidal wave of credit cards and crass commercialism.
Here’s hoping you enjoy this clip, immersing yourself in the visual magnificence of the Cathedral and the aural splendor of Pavarotti’s unforgettable tenor voice.
And here’s hoping as well that you and yours have a Merry and Blessed Christmas while looking forward to a beautiful and productive 2012—a New Year that’s hopefully a lot more upbeat than the difficult year now drawing to a close.
