WASHINGTON, March 14, 2013 — “Our country is in very, very serious struggle,” said Donald Trump, opening the morning of the second day of CPAC 2013. Trump, an enormously successful businessman, has been involved sporadically with Republican politics, at times floating the possibility of running for President as an independent. “We have to make America great again,” he said.
Trump began by focusing on illegal immigrants, saying that “every single one of them will vote Democratic.” How can Republicans compete? Encouraging immigrants from Europe, Trump said.
What’s the problem with the country, according to Donald Trump? He illustrated by telling a story. Allegedly, Trump heard of a beautiful White House reception taking place in a tent on the lawn. He offered to build the most beautiful ballroom in the country at the White House for $50-100 million dollars. What happened? “I never heard from them.”
Trump argued the mindset in our society has prejudiced Americans against successful people. “I have made $8 billion. … I have employed tens of thousands of people, and yet I’m continually criticized by total lightweights.”

The fear of wealth and success is a major failure of the Republican party as well, argued Trump. “If Mitt Romney made one mistake, it’s that he didn’t talk enough about his success.” Romney should have been proud of his accomplishments, rather than attempting to act like they were not important.
“We’re run by either very foolish or very stupid people. … Our country is a total and complete mess.” The key to restoration is leadership, said Trump. He specifically criticized outsourcing, claiming Apple should not be lauded for building their products in China.
