Massachusetts Maritime wins Chowder Bowl Game, St. Thomas rolls

ATLANTA, Sept. 14, 2013 — Quarterback Mike Stanton threw for 176 yards and overcame a pair of interceptions as Massachusetts Maritime squeaked out a 24-20 win Thursday over SUNY-Maritime in the Sixth Annual Chowder Bowl Game in Buzzards Bay, Mass.

Down 20-17 in the fourth quarter, Massachusetts Maritime (1-0) running back John Trudel put the Buccaneers ahead with a 12-yard touchdown run with 3:16 remaining. After starting the ensuing drive at mid-field, SUNY-Maritime marched the ball down to Massachusetts Maritime’s 10 yard line, but came up short as time expired.

Running back Paul Briggs picked up 117 rushing yards for the visiting Privateers of SUNY-Maritime (0-1), who total up 318 total yards of offense. Massachusetts Maritime totaled 288 yards and turned the ball over five times on the night.

Also on Thursday, the St. Thomas Tommies — ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, according to d3football.com —  marched into River Falls, Wisc., and walked away with a 25-7 win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons. It marked the 36th consecutive regular-season victory for St. Thomas (2-0).

The Tommies racked up five sacks on the night and kept UW-River Falls (0-2) to just 244 yards of offense. Quarterback Matt O’Connell led St. Thomas’ offense, passing for 260 yards as the Tommies amassed 438 total offensive yards.

St. Thomas quickly jumped to an 8-0 lead after fullback Dominic Truoccolo successfully completed a two-point conversion to cap a four-play scoring drive on St. Thomas’ first possession.

Though St. Thomas’s offense never fully kicked into overdrive, UW-River Falls narrowed the gap to 17-7 just before half, but could not manage to pull any closer.

In Ewing, N.J., on Friday, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Devils knocked off The College of New Jersey Lions by a score of 18-12. Quarterback Michael Santos completed 22 of 46 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown to help propel the Devils to victory.

In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, The College of New Jersey (0-2) drove the ball down the the 31 yard line of Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (1-0) before Devils linebacker Ryan Rodriguez intercepted Lions quarterback Christopher Spellman to seal a victory. Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham then ran out the clock.
