MISSOURI, 2013 – Appreciation for the ordinary things helps us understand what life is all about. It is the simple surroundings that are free for all of us to enjoy and provide us varying degrees of contentment and happiness during this cycle of our lives.
when we are young, we tend to take everything for granted. That is understandable because we are busy growing and learning about life. Everything is new and mysterious, and we are constantly in the process of digesting this input and making decisions about the future and things that may impact our lives.
This learning continues to varying degrees as we mature, whether we are single, entering the work force, getting married, becoming a parent, becoming a grandparent, then a great-grandparent and, in some cases, great-great-grandparent.
Life has its cycles, and we are absorbed with living out those cycles.
Along this highway of life, we are so busy growing and taking care of business that we don’t stop to smell the flowers.
Have you ever really looked at a flower and noticed its beauty? Or the bees that extract the nectar, which sustains their lives? Birds in flight are wondrous to watch as they fly across the sky, or as they work feverishly to build their nests, protecting and feeding their young. How about the ants and their busyness?
Have you ever taken a walk on the beach as the sun was rising with the quietness of the morning? Your ear is attuned to the slap-slap of the waves against the shore, and your face is refreshed by the sweetness of the breeze. Your bare feet touch the sand, and the sky provides a blue backdrop displaying beautiful billowing clouds.
How about a walk through the park or the woods, which provide rewarding beauty, especially in the spring and fall? Many people travel to the northeastern part of the United States to observe the flaming color of the plentiful trees during the fall season of the year.
Maybe it is time to take time out of your busy schedules to enjoy the multitude of simple things that are given without any cost. Besides watching the things that Mother Nature provides us, take notice on how a baby sleeps in innocence and purity. Notice when they are hungry, when they are playing with their toys—oh, and what a sight to watch! Sometimes you will catch yourself smiling, which is a great indicator that the simple things of life truly make you happy.
So again, leave all the communication devises off of your body and take a walk in the park and maybe smile or whistle a happy tune and enjoy the things that are free, non- threatening and put upon this earth for the human race to enjoy and as a by-product get stress free. You will see that life is truly beautiful when you take time for yourself and smell the roses.
However, that’s a time and place I am from—
