September 13, 2012, Chicago, Illinois - Dinesh D’Souza is coming to Chicago. After traveling to Kenya, Indonesia, and Hawaii to uncover Barack Obama’s past, the controversial conservative filmmaker is set to visit, arguably, the most exotic locale of them all - the President’s adopted hometown and embattled birthplace of the Chicago Way.

I invited D’Souza to Chicago for a special screening and Q&A about his surprising box-office smash, “2016: Obama’s America,” which is being hosted by pro-capitalism advocacy group, FreeCapitalismNow.com.

Being born and raised on Chicago’s Southside, I know a little bit about the place where Obama’s political identity was nurtured and then harvested. These were the same mean machine streets surveyed by a younger Barack Obama.   

This is also the city that forged Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod and other Chicago characters currently pulling the White House strings. The city has its lion’s share of radicals; Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and 1960’s Weatherman bomber-turned-college professor Bill Ayers are here too.

But what does all of this mean? D’Souza understands how all of this translates more than most.

“Chicago may be the President’s adopted hometown but how many Chicagoans know the real Barack Obama? I am coming to help Chicagoans get the side of the story that has been hidden from them for the last four years,” D’Souza said.

D’Souza’s film has struck a chord outside of the Chicago confines.

The film, produced with Schindler’s List producer Gerald Moen, took in $3.2 million at the box office last weekend for a total of $26 million to become the second highest all-time political documentary, passing Michael Moore’s Sicko and Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

The film’s unexpected box-office success even prompted the Obama campaign to issue a statement attacking the film last week as “an insidious attempt to dishonestly smear the president.”

But can D’Souza’s film provide some needed political reflection within the city’s censored walls?

That remains to be seen.

At the screening, Chicagoans will have an opportunity to ask D’Souza questions about the film and other aspects of the President’s past. The Q&A will be filmed for an episode of America’s Instant Townhall, which will air on ION Networks before the election.
