Car Review: the 2014 Volvo S60 T5 leads industry in safety technology

DALLAS, August 16, 2013 — If you are looking for a 2014 Volvo S60, expect the ultimate stylish sedan with an emphasis on luxury and power. In fact, this Volvo is all about a powerful engine coupled with a good ride and superb handling.

Competition for the 2014 Volvo includes the BMW 3 Series option, the Cadillac ATS, Acura TL or the Audi A4.

It has been announced, however, that the 2014 Volvo S60 is seeing a price increase from 2013 of about $520, with the likes of the 2014 Volvo S60 starting at $33,315 for the front-drive T5, the 2014 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design starting at $43,615 including shipping and the 2013 Volvo S60 T5 starting at $32,795 with a $895 destination charge.

Changes on the 2014 Volvo S60 include a slight redesign that features a new hood, front fenders and fascia.

The 2014 Volvo S60 is a midsize luxury sedan available in three trims, the one highlighted here being the T5 flavor. The T5 comes standard with 17-inch wheels sporting all season tires, an eight-way power  driver seat with three position memory, front seat lumbar support and seatback pockets, shimmer graphic aluminum inlay, electronic ignition with push button start and stop, leather and silk metal steering wheel including tilt and telescoping, an electronic parking brake, dual zone electronic climate control, heated power outside rearview mirrors with memory, 60/40 folding rear seat with center armrest pass-thru, power folding rear seats and headrest and rain sensor windshield wipers.

This model also boasts a seven-inch color, LCD monitor and all the audio goodies like HD radio, eight high-end speakers and USB/AUX input.

On the Premier package, add keyless ignition/entry, a power glass moonroof, leather upholstery, a power passenger seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

With the Sports Package, you get sports seats, paddle shifters, dynamic chassis and 18-inch Titania alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the 2014 S60 T5 has a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 engine that produces 250 horsepower along with 266 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic tranny and front-wheel drive are standard with advanced quick shift, but the all-wheel drive is optional. Also included in the performance features of the S60 T5 are power assisted rack-and-pinion steering and a touring chasiss with advanced stability control.

As for safety, take note of the City Safe feature, which can automatically stop the S60 in the case of a low-speed collision with another vehicle or fixed object. You can also opt for a system that allows for the vehicle to sense pedestrians as well. Other safety features include a Unibody high strength steel safety cage, antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side and full-length side curtain airbags, whiplash-reducing front head restraints, child safety locks on the rear doors and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Inside, the 2014 Volvo S60 T5 interior is a luxury sedan design complete with luxurious leather and all the bells and whistles, easily allowing this model to keep up with the competition in all areas while giving it a unique look of its own.

Like most Volvos, the S60 T5 is fun to drive and handles smoothly and efficiently, making it a long haul choice for drivers as well as a smart about town vehicle for the anyone demanding a classic ride.

Should You Need to Know: This one comes with a factory-scheduled maintenance at 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 miles.

Miles Per Gallon: The 2014 Volvo 260 T5 comes in with 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Cost: For the 2014 Volvo 260 T5 I drove with the Premier and Sports package additions, the price came in at $38,065.
