Katharine Holmes of Chevy Chase, Md., took fourth place at the first-ever Youth Olympics in Singapore on Tuesday.
The Youth Olympics brings together athletes from 57 countries. Holmes was one of five fencers representing the United States, competing alongside Alexander Massialas, Will Spear, Celina Merza and Mona Shaito.
Holmes was selected because of her outstanding results in her age group.
This year she was a member of the Junior World Championships team that took second place in Baku, Azerbaijan, afte an individual second-place finish in the Cadet World Championships the previous year in Belfast, Ireland.
